North Cove Welcomes Trout to the Classroom!

North Cove Elementary is so excited to be the recipient of a Trout in the Classroom Sponsorship.  Very few schools in the state have this opportunity.  Our program is being funded by Trout Unlimited - The Table Rock Chapter.  They were able to sponsor us using their funds and a donation made to them by the Ambrose Family in honor of Rev. Clay Turner & his wife, Jane.  We are so grateful for their kindness and for making this special opportunity available to us at our school.
Students and teachers were introduced to the Trout in the Classroom Program Thursday, April 28th at a special Reading Adventure.  They were treated to a presentation about trout and participated in special activities involving fish.  Our students will be raising trout from eggs, monitoring tank water, studying stream habitat, learning about water resources and conservation, and exploring ecosystems in the months to come.  Students will also participate in the release of the trout to a local stream with guidance from the NC Wildlife Commission.  The trout will be raised in a large tank located in our media center.  A special thank you to Mrs. Lynn Freeman & Mrs. Penny Jackson for their work and for going above and beyond to bring special learning opportunities to our school!
September Trout Update
We have been getting ready for our new arrivals!  Our friends from Trout Unlimited visited last week and helped us get our tank ready.  We learned about trout, their life cycle, and their habitat.  Our trout eggs are scheduled to be here the week of September 23rd.  At that time, the eggs will be put in a basket in the tank until they hatch( about 10 days)  When they hatch, we will release them from the basket into the tank and feed them and watch them grow.  The tank is covered for now so the eggs will not be disturbed by light.  It will stay covered until the egg sacks are gone and the fry are swimming around the tank.  There is a small door in the tank to see the eggs and alevin(hatchlings) until we can remove the front.
We are so excited about their arrival!
Update
Our eggs have arrived!  They are safe and sound in their new home.  We are learning more with each visit about caring for trout and their habitat.  We are so excited to see them grow!
DIARY OF A TROUT
September 23, 2011
Today I arrived at North Cove Elementary!  I love my new home.  There were so many friends there to greet me.  I am cozy in my new home.  Just waiting for time to hatch! Right now I am an egg - you can see little black dots that will be my eyes.  You can also see yellow on me - that is my yolk sac.  That helps me survive.   My friends at North Cove are watching me grow and taking really good care of me.  They are making sure the water is just the right temperature and that my new home is safe for me.  The students have been writing about the process that I am going through to become a full grown trout.  I can see that they are all so excited to watch me grow!

Wow, I am finally growing a little.  So many changes taking place. Today I have wiggled out of the egg sack and I am swimming around.  I have eyes and you can call me an alevin now.  I will keep swimming around until my friends all join me.  Check out my video below!

I have lots of friends out of their egg sacks now.  We are busy swimming around and growing every day!  I see the fourth grade students and their teachers checking my water often to make sure it is safe for me.  They are taking such great care of us!  The library has been a really quiet and peaceful place for us to hatch and begin our journey into this world.

Still growing!  I have been feeding off of the yolk sack I hatched out of.  Most of our egg sacks are completely gone now.  My friends at North Cove are keeping a close eye on my chiller and making sure the environment is just right for us!  A power surge on Friday gave us a real scare.  But, all is well and no harm done.  My friends have been removing eggs that didn't hatch, monitoring our growth, and testing our water.  Next stop....  Dinner Time!    Next time you see me I'll be a "fry".  Some of us are already swimming to the top of the basket and ready to venture out of it.  I'll soon be ready for my first real meal!  I'll be learning to feed and will make my way out of the small basket I have been in and be introduced to "the tank".  Ready or not world - here we come!
